There’s a huge chance you’ve been pronouncing a lot of common words wrongly. There’s also no shame in admitting the English language is hard, difficult to master, and constantly evolving; but, like most things, it gets better with practice, even for people who had to take it up as a second language.
So, here are 10 words you might be pronouncing incorrectly and how to fix them.

Definition: (slang) One who imposes one’s views on others, or is considered unfairly oppressive or needlessly strict.
It sounds more like nat-si, not na-zi, or na-si
Example: OkadaBooks usually gets called a grammar Nazi.
- Meme
Definition: A photo, video, or GIF with slight adaptations, circulated on the internet.
It sounds more like mim (or meem), not me-me, neither is it mme-mme.
Example: I don’t like that book meme you sent me yesterday, kindly send another.
- Often
Definition: Frequently
It sounds like or-foon, not of-tun.
Example: Since OkadaBooks came into my life, I’ve been reading more often.
- Courtesy
Definition: Polite behavior
It sounds like kor-te-si, or kor-ti-si, not kort-si
Example: Thank you for the courtesy of reading this article.
- Mischievous
Definition: Causing mischief; troublesome, cheeky, badly behaved.
It sounds something like mis-chu-vus, not mis-chee-vi-us.
Example: That boy is mischievous, he cannot be trusted at all.
- Pizza
Definition: A baked dish of thinly rolled bread dough and tasty toppings.
It sounds like pit-sa, not pi-za, or pi-sa
Example: I brought a large box of pizza home last night; my girlfriend ate it all.
- Cache
Definition: (computing) A fast temporary storage, where recently or frequently used information is stored to avoid frequent reload.
It sounds like cash, not cash-ay.
Example: If your browser isn’t responding, clear your cache!
- Suite
Definition: A group of connected rooms, usually separable from other rooms by means of access.
It sounds like swit, not su-hit
Example: My next birthday will be celebrated at the Presidential Suite.
- Regime
Definition: A period of rule
It sounds like raygeem, not rigime.
Example: Some people say we’re back to the military regime, do you agree?
- Honor/ Honour
Definition: Recognition of importance or value.
The letter ‘H is silent! It sounds like or-nor, not hor-nor!
Example: It is important that we honor our favorite reading app by reading more books on it.
