He was standing in shame with dropped shoulders, staring at the knot he had tied to the low-hanging tree branch. Guilt was boldly written all over his face, the heartache was too much for him to bear, hence, his reason for standing on the wooden stool.
“God in Heaven, how did I actually let this happen? I didn’t know it would go down this way! He was supposed to disappear! Just like he always did when the mob got angry and tried to stone him. Now, the one time I was hoping for him to do the same thing, he let himself get caught.” He wailed as he threw himself down in exasperation.
“ Ahhh, what have I done? Why would I sell him for only 30 pieces of silver if I had only intended to keep the money to myself? We needed the money! It was my job as the finance keeper to make accounts and also make sure that we never went broke. A group of more than 13 unemployed men, going from places to places spreading the word. Where else would be our source of income if not odd jobs? Certainly we needed the extra money for miscellaneous things.”
His brain began to spin inside his skull, giving him the gripes. He bent over on his knees and spewed out his bile. While staggering, he got up and took the knot hanging from the tree in his hands. With shaking hands, he slipped it over his head and lowered it to his neck.
While holding on to it with his left hand, he wiped his face with the right, as if to prepare himself for the inevitable.
“I am sorry that you are no more. I’m sorry I had to act the way I did, it was only so that the temple leaders would believe that I was actually betraying you. Imagine if someone like Peter or Thomas knew about my plans, they would have blabbed and in the process ruined the surprise. Maybe if that had happened, you would still be here. Please forgive me Lord for my foolishness.”
With a final swish he gave himself a push off the stool. Dangling from the head and choking loudly till he croaked his final.
People shook their heads in disapproval and contempt when they found the body of the man who betrayed the Master with a kiss.
“His greed has caught up with him,” they said.
Henceforth, he will be known as ‘Judas Iscariot, the betrayer of Jesus’.
