OkadaBooks partnered with Lafarge Africa Plc —the biggest building and concrete solutions company in the world— to kick-start a digital literacy outreach by teaching pupils in primary schools how to read with smartphones.

In preparation of Children’s Day, OkadaBooks and Lafarge visited Ken-Ade private school in Makoko and read children books on OkadaBooks with the pupils in Primary 3, 4, 5 and 6. We introduced digital literacy to the pupils and explained how they can leverage it to become digital literates in the future.
It was a very thrilling experience for us and the pupils as they were excited to adopt another method of reading and found the stories we read to them very captivating. There were a total of 156 pupils and 3 devices were used in each class.
We divided the pupils into groups: Stories were read, new words were learnt, and moral lessons were discussed.
With this outreach, we hope to change the impression most people have about smartphones being objects of distraction, but rather see them as tools for improving and promoting literacy. One phone can be used as a library to give a child access to over 10,000 children books!
If you would like to donate an old phone to support this program, so that 4-6 kids no longer have to share one device, then please fill this form, or send us a message on Whatsapp or a DM Instagram, or Email us or Call us.
