The woman tills the ground
And the baby on her back
Tethered, a boat to shore, safe,
Dreaming of eating,
The greening of teeth.
The climbing of trees,
Catching butterflies newly hatched,
Winging into the sun drenched afternoon,
Perching on mangoes yellowing, falling off.
Unasked for bounties
To sup a conference of earthworms
And that air purloined off decay becomes
Oxygen for the maize she inters.
