Renowned Nigeria poet and literary giant, J. P. Clark is dead. He was 85.
As one of Nigeria’s (and Africa’s) most prominent authors, the late Emeritus Professor Clark was renowned for his poetry, theatrical works, and a creative career that spanned over five decades.
In 1991, he received the Nigerian National Order of Merit Award for literary excellence, which is the highest academic award in Nigeria with only 70 recipients since its institution in1979.
The statement released by his family, following his death, reads:
“The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, wishes to announce that Emeritus Professor of Literature and Renowned Writer, Prof J.P. Clark, has finally dropped his pen in the early hours of October 13, 2020.”
“Prof. J. P. Clark has paddled on to the great beyond in comfort of his wife, children, and siblings, around him.”
It is our hopes that his soul rests with those of the other giants who’d gone before him, in peace. 💛
