Crimson Night by Obehi Dibua is a beautiful story of power, sacrifice, and unconditional love. It is the first in a series of stories that promise to be engaging, interesting and charged with intimidating power.
What I really like about a series is the unique responsibility each book carries as an individual entity and part of a whole. For me, the first book is almost always the most important. It carries the weight of the story, serving as an introduction and a tale within itself. Producing a body of work that effectively serves this dual function is not an easy feat. In Crimson Night, it is executed flawlessly.
The writing in itself is crisp and expository and it fulfills the role of building the backstory very accurately.
Let’s talk about Osezele. To me, she’s a paradox – capable of love and hate, blinding pain and soaring joy. Even though she doesn’t know her own strength, her power can be felt in every emotion, every wisp. She is a representation of what it means to be human; vulnerable and open, yet undeniably powerful.
We follow her on a journey of self-discovery where we see a whole new meaning to friendship and family as she uncovers her truth and finds love.
Crimson Night touches on several themes, the main one being power and the greed and sacrifice it inevitably brings in tow. People react differently when faced with the power of such magnitude, so great they can’t begin to fathom it. Some cower in fear under the glare of its magnificence, some vehemently deny its very existence, while others wholeheartedly accept and embrace it. Albeit, a little too eagerly.
Regardless, the fact remains that, the true extent of power can only be felt with a mix of all these – a little fear, a little pain, a little hesitation and a heart full of faith.
Crimson Night is a short, yet, exciting read and I can’t wait to read the other parts!
