“Mama, mama”
The shouts of Ikenga’s shrill voice filled the whole compound.
Nkechi immediately left pounding the cassava which was to serve as breakfast for the family to see what could be the matter with her beloved son.
“Mama see what I caught”
Ikenga said as he proudly gave her the bush meat one of his traps had caught.
“That’s my boy” s
She said happily as she took the meat from him and carried him in her arms.
“Nkechi, Nkechi why are you laughing in your sleep”.
She opened her eyes to see her husband Obinna standing before her, and now the tears poured uncontrollably. No matter how she cried now, Ikenga would never bring meat for her.
He suddenly started having difficulties in breathing, alongside cough, stuffy nose, chest pain and vomiting most times. The local healer called it the white man’s disease and said nothing could be done about it.
