Karanta Cikin Hausa - Read in English

“Nobody reads anymore”

I heard my chemistry teacher gasp in exhaustion

“the best way to hide something from people is to put it in writing”.

She had been trying to get us to answer a particular question but nobody seemed to know the answer.

I had been using my iPhone until this point. I looked up and realized what she was saying was true. As I looked around at my classmates I realized that none of them were listening to what the teacher was saying.

It struck me!

The culture of reading, that our parents and teachers have struggled to impart in us, is gradually dwindling. Mankind is gradually turning into puppets controlled by technology. It’s saddening.

“Knowledge is power, knowledge is power”

We keep saying that, but then how are we going to get this knowledge if we don’t sit down and read? It is no surprise that those that are mock and scorned for being “book worms and nerds” are people that would still become leaders of tomorrow. Yes, readers are leaders. To be able to be a leader you have to know. We see good literary works being forgotten and going into extinction. Books by great authors such as William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens. We are gradually entering a generational era where there would be no appreciation for good work.

This is frightening. Its frightening to me because I know the impact of books and literary pieces in my personal life. With good literary works you get to live in your imagination. Enjoy and relishing every moment of these and never wanting it to end. With good literary works you can be who you have always imagined that you want to be in that dream of yours.

With books you can travel the world and back in a swift moment. You can even be to places that are not yet in existence. You can discover the secret of our very existence. Most of all you get to grow in knowledge and in wisdom because then you stood with wise men and reasoned with them.
To read is great, in fact you don’t have to leave you comfort zone to read. Your teachers won’t read a book for you. Your parents and mentors can only create a path to help you grow but only you can truly grow. So, read a book today and another tomorrow!
